Adult Respiratory Illness and Antibiotics: Management Strategies to Promote
Appropriate Use
The conference was designed for internal medicine, family practice, general practice, emergency medicine, and urgent care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The conference, broadcast from the Marshfield Clinic, was viewed at 40 sites throughout Wisconsin and included a live question and answer session.
Learning objectives included:
- Provide a brief review of the epidemiology of pneumococcal antibiotic resistance.
- Highlight the latest diagnostic and treatment recommendations for common upper respiratory illnesses in the adult population.
- Review patient education and communication strategies to promote judicious antibiotic use.
Keynote Speaker:
Ralph Gonzales, MD, MSPH, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. A nationally recognized expert in appropriate antibiotic use, Dr. Gonzales chaired the national workgroup that published "Principles of Appropriate Antibiotic Use for Treatment of Acute Respiratory Tract Infections in Adults" in the March 20, 2001 Annals of Internal Medicine.
